Sercquiais

Sercquiais or Sark - French ( Lé Sèrtchais ) is a Norman dialect which is spoken on the Channel Island of Sark. Among the islanders the language with the term " patois " (Eng. " local language " ) is called.

In Sercquiais is a created in the 16th century branch of Jèrriais, the language of the inhabitants of the Channel Island of Jersey. The branch was formed during the colonization of uninhabited isle by 40 colonists families who came from the islands of Saint Quen and Jersey, out; further modifications were the developing project of the dialect by influences of Dgèrnésiais, the dialect of the island of Guernsey. In addition, the dialect is closely related to the extinct dialect of the island of Alderney, Auregnais, and the Kontinentalnormannisch.

The active speakers of Sercquiais include the older inhabitants of the island. Despite the strong adsorption English and anglicized lexemes shows a conservatism of phonology, since phonemes are obtained, which were dismantled in Jèrriais since the 16th century. However, the language has suffered greatly in recent years under the immigration of English tax evaders and the non-existent promotion by government institutions. Many of the local place names have retained their sark - French name. Suppose also is the possibility that there had been in the days of the early settlement of the two subdialects Sercquiais.
