Serdobsk
Serdobsk (Russian Сердобск ) is a town in Penza Oblast (Russia) with 35,393 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).
Geography
The city is located on the western edge of the Volga plate about 110 km southwest of the Oblasthauptstadt Penza at the Serdoba, a left tributary of the opening into the Don Chopjor.
Serdobsk is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.
The town lies on the railway line opened in 1894-1896 Balashov - Rtischtschewo - Pensa.
History
The village was founded in 1699 as a fortified settlement Serdobinskaja Sloboda. Called mid-18th century Bolschaja Serdoba, the site received on 7 November 1780 municipal law as an administrative center of a circle ( Ujesds ) the governorship Saratov ( from 1782 onwards Government ) under the name Serdob, later Serdobsk. The name of the river and city is derived from Mordvinian сярдо / sjardo for deer or elk.
In the 19th century, the city was dominated by agriculture. In the 1920s and 1930s created the first major companies in the food industry, in World War II engineering companies from the western part of the country were moved to the city.

Culture and sights
In Serdobsk several buildings of the 19th and early 20th centuries have been preserved, among other things, the Semstwoverwaltung (1875 ), the girls' grammar school (1910 ), Realschule (1913 ), the fire station, and the Archangel Michael Cathedral ( собор Михаила Архангела / sobor Michaila Archangela ) from the years 1895 to 1905.
Already since 1919, there is a local history museum.
20 km west of the city, in the village Nadeschdino, lie Palace and Park of Prince AB Kurakin from the late 18th / early 19th century.
Economy
The most important companies in the city is the machinery factory, a supplier to the Moscow car factory SiL. In addition, there are works for incandescent lamps, clocks and furniture as well as various factories in the food industry.
