Serer people

The Serer are in addition to the Wolof and Pulaars the largest ethnic group in Senegal and Serer speak - a Niger -Congo language. Most members also speak Wolof, which predominates in the cities.

Their society is matrilineal structure and is characterized by strictly separate castes: nobles, warriors, citizens, slaves, and artisans (eg, smiths ) and artists (such as griots ). Today, usually only two layers are distinguished: farmers and landowners.

Your own myth has it that they migrated between the 10th and 13th century from the north, one to Central Senegal. The Serer are cultivators (rice, millet, sorghum) and ranchers.
