Sergei Slonimsky

Sergei Mikhailovich Slonimsky (Russian: Сергей Михайлович Слонимский; born August 12, 1932 in Leningrad ) is a Russian composer, pianist and musicologist.

Slonimsky is the son of the Russian writer Mikhail Slonimsky and a nephew of the Russian- American composer Nicolas Slonimsky. He studied at the Moscow School of Music in 1943 until 1950. Slonimsky is since 1959 Professor at the Conservatory in St. Petersburg.

In his more than 100 pieces, operas, symphonies and other works, Slonimsky moves of twelve-tone music to a popular style but also stylistic elements from jazz and neo- romanticism can be found in his compositions.

For the EXPO 2000 in Hannover Arila Siegert staged his chamber opera The Master and Margarita ( Bulgakov after ).

Sergei Slonimsky was outlawed in the Soviet period.
