Sergey Nikolsky

Sergei Mikhailovich Nikolsky (Russian: Сергей Михайлович Никольский, Sergey Mikhailovich Nikolsky English transcription or Nikolskii; * 17 Apriljul / April 30 1905greg in Taliza Zavod, Perm province, today Sverdlovsk Oblast, .. † November 9, 2012 in Moscow) was a Russian mathematician.

Life

Nikolski initially wanted to be an engineer, and attended until 1929, the Institute of Education in Jekaterinoslaw ( now University Dnepropetrovsk ). He then studied at the Moscow State University as a student of Andrei Kolmogorov. In the 1930s he worked at the University of Dnepropetrovsk and habilitated at the Steklov Institute of Mathematics, where he then worked. Since 1948 he also teaches at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology ( MIPT ), where he gave lectures in 2005.

Nikolski dealt among other things with functional analysis and approximation theory. In 1951 he introduced the Nikolski spaces, discussed in detail in his book, Approximation of functions of several variables and Imbedding Theorem. His student Oleg Bessow led building on 1961, the Besov spaces a. Nikolski wrote a popular in Russia Analysis textbook ( 1st edition 1973).

He became a member of the Soviet Academy of Sciences in 1972. In 1954 he gave a plenary lecture at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Amsterdam (Some questions of approximation of functions by polynomials ), 1962 he was Invited Speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM ) in Stockholm (On boundary properties of differentiable functions of several variables).
