Sérgio Cabral Filho

Sérgio Cabral Filho ( born January 27, 1963 in Rio de Janeiro) is a Brazilian journalist and politician and currently the Governor of the State of Rio de Janeiro. 2009 called him the magazine P.Temporada as one of the 100 most important people in Brazil.

He is the son of the journalist Sérgio Cabral and also a journalist with training at the Centro Universitário da Cidade do Rio de Janeiro.

Political career

He joined the early 1980s into the youth wing of the Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro ( PMDB ). In 1982, he supported the career of his father, Sergio Cabral, in the elections for City Council. In 1984 he was coordinator of the committee Pedro Ernesto in support of Tancredo Neves. In March 1987, he entered public life, as he was TURISRIO became director of Operações, the Tourism Society of the State of Rio de Janeiro under the government of Moreira Franco.

Twice, in 1992 and 1996, he ran unsuccessfully for the PMDB for the governorship of the State of Rio de Janeiro. In the 2000 elections, he supported the candidate of the Partido da Frente Liberal, Luiz Paulo Conde, where he was defeated in 1996 in the second round.

When the deputies elections to the Parliament of the State of 1990, 1994 and 1998, he was elected deputies. In 2002 he reached the post of a Senator of the State of Rio de Janeiro in the Senate elections.

On 29 October 2006 he was elected with the support of his predecessor Anthony and Rosinha Garotinho governor of Rio de Janeiro in the second ballot. He received 68 % of the vote against 32 % of its counter- candidate Denise Frossard of the PPS. The inauguration took place on 1 January 2007.

In October 2010, he was in the first round as governor re-elected with more than 66 % of the valid votes.
