Sergio Tofano

Sergio Tofano aka Sto ( born August 20, 1883 in Rome, † October 28, 1973 ) was an Italian comic book artist, writer, director, actor and artist. He became known especially through the character of Signor Bonaventura, which he drew from 1917 to 1953 and brought to the stage.

Life and work

As the son of a judge Tofano first studied law, but also had acting ambitions. From the year 1909 he was a member of several theater groups and began a parallel career as an illustrator with the pseudonym of Sto. From 1914 to 1923 he was responsible for the magazine Il Numero, on October 28, 1917 in Il Corriere dei piccoli appeared for the first time his most famous cartoon character, Signor Bonaventura. This figure, which is always a beggar began their adventure and without its own merits at the end of each story to one million lire was richer, Tofano drew not only until 1953, but brought them repeatedly on the stage.

Together with the actress Rosetta Tofano, with whom he was married from 1923 until her suicide in 1960, Tofano had a son, the writer-director Gilberto Tofano.
