Sernftal

The Sernftal or Kleintal is a mountain valley in the Swiss canton of Glarus. It is named after the Sernf, an 18 km-long right-hand tributary of the Linth which opens at Schwanden in this. The Sernftal belongs to the municipality of Glarus Süd unit. There are the villages of Elm, Matt and Engi.

Geology

At the entrance to Sernftal is one of the most famous geological sites of the Alps, called the Glarus overthrust: In the Lochsite superimpose older rock strata younger, which led to the knowledge of overthrust mountain of blankets. The American Museum of Natural History in New York a faithful copy is shown. In July 2008, the Glarus overthrust was included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.

Name

The Sernftal was first mentioned in 1240 in a court document as Serniftal. Under the same name appeared in the mid-14th century Säckinger land register. Subsequent designations were Sernef, Sernft and Sernfft. The name comes either from the Indo-European water for flow or water for red, which would refer to the red stones in the water ( Sernifit, or Verrucano ).

Traffic

Throughout the Sernftal performs a main road. Between 1905 and 1969, ran between Schwanden and the Elm Sernftalbahn. Today, the car Sernftal is the bearer of public transport.

High-voltage line

Along the Sernftal the preliminary line leads called 380 kV line with two three-phase systems the NOK that yields the highest line in Europe over the preliminary glacier. It was built in the 1950s and 1960s.
