Sernhac

Sernhac is a commune with 1699 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Gard of the Languedoc -Roussillon region.

Geography

Sernhac is located four kilometers from Remoulins and the Pont du Gard and 20 kilometers from Nimes.

The neighboring communities of Sernhac are verse -Pont -du -Gard in the north, Remoulins in the northeast, Fournès in the east, the south and Meynes Lédenon in the West.

Etymology

The name probably comes from the Latin Saraceni, which means " Saracens ".

History

The village was probably founded in the early phase of Roman occupation, possibly in the time of origin of the Pont du Gard. It is conceivable that the Romans the place for monitoring the Gardontals founded, the military camp of Théziers opposite. Sernhac lay on the Roman road from Narbonne to Lyon. In 736, Charles Martel defeated in a battle near Sernhac the Saracens. Later, the place was surrounded by high walls. There were only a few entrances, one of which was the Porte Sarrasine. In Roman times it was near a small hamlet called Sainte Colombe. This was destroyed during the migration period. There they built a chapel (named Sainte Colombe ), which is known that they still existed in 1522. King Francis I in 1535 lived in the hostel Cheval Blanc ( German: White horse ) in Sernhac. 1564 were Charles IX. and a number of other important personalities of the time in Sernhac. 1647 built the Black Penitents, an organization founded in 1559, at a chapel on the north wall of the church. 1733 the church got its new bell. In 1790, the municipality had 1332 inhabitants. During the French Revolution, the church became a " temple " of the cult of reason. In 1860 the railway line Lyon- Nîmes was inaugurated. A year later, on February 11, 1861, the three and a half tonne statue was unveiled in the bell tower. Until 1891, the population had declined to 959 residents. 1902, the third bell of the church was consecrated. In 1930, the mill, the village had supplied with water, was severely damaged in a storm. A public square after the demolition of dilapidated building was completed in 1954. 1959 in Sernhac a market was established.
