Serpent's Wall

Snake Wall (Ukrainian Змієві вали; Russian Змиевы валы ) is a landmark in northern Ukraine, near Kiev. It includes an older system of Fortifikationswälle and a more modern fortifications from the Second World War.

The older walls are dated from the 2nd century BC until the 7th century AD, according to the radiocarbon dating method. What nation has built, has not clearly known. Various hypotheses are contradicted by Sarmatians, Ostrogoths and Early East Slavs ( students). The objective of setting up the ramparts was obvious protection against the nomads from the southern steppes. The currently known remains of the walls have a total length of 1,000 kilometers.

In the epoch of Kievan Rus the serpent mounds were built the Great and his successors under Grand Duke Vladimir. Newer sections include inside wooden hulls that stabilize the earthen walls around them. The height of the now heavily eroded walls snake was about 8 to 10 m. Scientists have expressed the suspicion that wooden fortifications were present on the queue ramparts to Vladimir times. Along the ramparts snake pull on the southern side traces of a ditch.
