Rock formation of the mountain Montsant

The Serra de Montsant is a mountain range in the comarca of Priorat the Autonomous Community of Catalonia (Spain) and is part of the Catalan Vorküstengebirges. On the slopes of the mountain lies the wine region Montsant.

Location

The massif is located between the river and the river Siurana Montsant. It covers an area of 135 km ² and has a stretch from northeast to southwest 17 ​​kilometers.

Geology

The mountain range is in the southeast rises steeply, rugged and rocky and has several peaks of over 1000 meters. The highest elevation is the Roca Corbatera ( 1163 meters). In the gently sloping north-west, numerous small creeks before they open in the river Montsant, formed deep valleys. In the karst landscape, there are numerous caves.

Parc Natural del Montsant

2002 Nature Park was built with an area of ​​9242 ha in a part of the mountain range.

Vegetation

In the dry rocky areas dominated by a low vegetation of herbs and shrubs with single pines. In the southwest, the vegetation is dense and consists of hazel, holly and yew. On the banks of the river there are poplars, ash and willow.

Fauna

Many rare species of mammals such as wild cat, lynx, marten and birds of prey such as the peregrine falcon, hawk eagle and golden eagle are located here. There are also many species of birds, amphibians, and lizards.
