Serratia

Serratia marcescens colonies on the surface of agar gel in a Petri dish

In bacteria of the genus Serratia is a group of gram-negative rod-shaped bacteria of the family Enterobacteriaceae ( Enterobacteriaceae ).

The genus Serratia includes 13 different types, the most common representatives of S. marcescens, whose significant feature is its red pigmentation.

The prefer habitat of Serratia species is the environment of the intestinal flora. As pathogens, the bacteria rarely play a role, but the frequency of nosocomial infections (pneumonia, wound infection ) increases to pediatric wards and intensive care units.
