Sertaconazole is a drug from the group of imidazole antifungals, which is used for the treatment of superficial fungal infections of the skin. In addition to its broad spectrum of action ( against yeasts, dermatophytes, staphylococci, streptococci, Fusarium, Aspergillus ) to sertaconazole distinguished due to its high lipophilicity (log P = 6.2 ) by a long persistence in the lipophilic areas of the skin (stratum corneum and stratum lucidum ) from. The mode of action of sertaconazole is due to inhibition of the enzyme lanosterol demethylase, which plays an important role in the synthesis of ergosterol, a component of the cell membranes of fungi.

Therapeutic Application

Sertaconazole has similar effects and side effects such as clotrimazole. Like other azole antifungals sertaconazole is only slightly absorbed ( about 1.5 %). In a pharmacokinetic study of sertaconazole but not an active substance in blood or urine samples, the active ingredient in humans was after several days of topical administration are detected by subjects, suggesting that practically is not absorbed. Used pharmaceutically as sertaconazole nitrate salt.

It is mainly applied topically as a cream or solution to treat fungal infections of the skin caused by yeasts or dermatophytes. Against dermatophytes (the main cause of athlete's foot) affects sertaconazole both fungistatic and fungicidal in therapeutic doses. Under treatment with sertaconazole occur as side effects reported very rarely ( ie less than one in 10,000 patients) for skin irritation such as redness, burning and itching.
