Servoz

Servoz is a commune in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region.

Geography

Servoz is located on 814 m above sea level. M., west of Chamonix -Mont- Blanc, about 56 km southeast of the city of Geneva (air line). The village is located in a valley in the Savoie Alps at the foot of Mont Blanc, at the mouth of Diosaz in the Arve, in the southeastern Faucigny.

The area of ​​13.47 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the upper Arvetals. The southern boundary runs along the Arve, the steeply sloping westward flowing through a canyon below Servoz and after a few kilometers reach the wide valley basin of Sallanches. To the north the municipality area extends over the valley and the slopes of Servoz up to the heights of the Massif de Sixt. To the east of the municipality floor extends into the gorge of the Diosaz and to the north of it lies Pointe Noire de Pormenaz, on with 2324 meters above sea level. At Servoz next to the village itself includes various hamlet settlements and farmsteads, including:

  • Vieux- Servoz (820 m above sea level. M. ) at the upper entrance to the gorge of the Arve

  • La Côte (1050 m above sea level. M. ) on the hillside north of the Arve

Neighboring communities of Servoz are Passy in the north, Chamonix -Mont- Blanc in the east and Les Houches in the south.

History

The territory of Servoz was already inhabited during the Roman period, as could be shown by means of ceramic fragments dating from the 3rd and 4th century. Servoz itself is mentioned only in the late Middle Ages. The place name is derived from the patois expression serva (forest ). The congregation joined in 1864 by the Canton Saint- Gervais- les- Bains to the newly created Canton of Chamonix -Mont- Blanc.

Attractions

The village church of Saint- Loup is originally from 1537, but was enlarged in 1697 and the Baroque style. The Oratory of Saint -Bernard at Vieux- Servoz was built in the 19th century. Furthermore ruins of a tower from the 16th century are preserved.

Population

With 930 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Servoz one of the small towns in the Haute-Savoie region. During the 20th century, the population steadily increased due to high levels of emigration from (1901 were still in Servoz counted 755 inhabitants). Since the mid- 1980s, however, a significant increase in population was recorded again.

Economy and infrastructure

Servoz was until well into the 20th century a predominantly marked by one country and alpine farming village. Also, the mining ( copper, lead and silver ) played a certain role at times. Today there are various operations of small businesses. Many workers are commuters who engage in the larger towns in the vicinity of their work.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares, but is of the four-lane main road N205 ( Annemasse, Chamonix ) easily accessible. Another road connection with Passy. The Le Lac railway station on the route Saint- Gervais- Vallorcine is located at a distance of 1 km from the town center.
