Serzh Sargsyan

Serzh Sargsyan Asati (Armenian Սերժ Ազատի Սարգսյան / Serzh Sargsyan Asati, in scientific transliteration SerZ Azati Sargsyan; * June 30, 1954 in Stepanakert, Nagorno-Karabakh, Azerbaijan SSR ) is the current President of the Republic of Armenia.

Career

According to official figures Sargsyan studied from 1970 to 1979 at the philological faculty of the Yerevan State University, interrupted by military service from 1972 to 1974. He then worked as a functionary of the CPSU and the Komsomol youth organization in his native city Stepanakert ( Xankəndi ) and Nagorno-Karabakh. Sargsyan became involved in the movement for the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh from the Azerbaijan SSR and Azerbaijan, was from 1989 to 1993 head of the so-called Self-Defense Forces of the Republic of Nagorno Karabakh and in addition from 1990 to 1993 Member of the National Assembly of Armenia. Since 2004 he has been President of the Armenian Chess Federation.

From 1993 to 2007 Sargsyan defense minister of Armenia ( the official title changed ). Between March 2007 and April 2008, he held the post of Prime Minister. In February 2008, he was elected to succeed President Robert Kocharian. Although the OSCE election observers described the ballot as largely fair, the candidate Levon Ter -Petrossian called after the election for demonstrations and called for an annulment of his opinion, fake election. On March 1, 2008, a mass demonstration was violently broken up.

On 9 April 2008 Sargsyan was sworn in as President of the Republic of Armenia. In the Armenian presidential elections on February 18, 2013 he was confirmed in office.

Private

Sarkisian is with the music teacher Rita Aleksandri Sargsyan ( born March 6, 1962), married and has two children, including the daughter Satenik ( born August 17, 1986).

Besides his native Armenian Sargsyan speaks fluent Russian. In addition, he has good knowledge of Turkish or Azerbaijani language and he understands rudimentary English.
