Sessa Aurunca

Sessa Aurunca is an Italian municipality ( comune ) with 22,060 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the province of Caserta in Campania. The municipality borders the province of Latina. The city is located about 40 kilometers northwest of Caserta and about 30 kilometers east of Formia. Through the territory of the municipality of the Garigliano River runs along the foot of the extinct volcano Roccamonfina.

History

The city stands on the remains of the ancient village settlement Suessa Aurunca, which was the capital of the Ausonians. The old city was slightly higher (approximately 600 meters above sea level) on the crater rim of the volcano. To 337 BC the settlement was abandoned because of the pressure of the Sidiciner was too large. 313 BC was a start-up as a Roman colony under the old name, but a little below the crater. From the Augustan period, the settlement was known as Colonia Iulia Felix Classica Suessa.

In recent times the church was the site of a nuclear power plant.
