History

Until the 19th century, an unimportant village, Sesto San Giovanni grew quickly in the late years of the 19th century and early 20th century. Several industries sprang up, including Falck, Campari, Magneti Marelli and Breda. During this period, the population grew from 5,000 inhabitants in 1880 to 14,000 inhabitants 1911. After the Second World War, many immigrants from southern Italy settled. Their heyday arrived in the city in 1981 with 95,000 residents.

In the 1990s, Sesto San Giovanni suffered an economic crisis and many of the old established companies closed their branches in the city.
