SET Index

The SET Index is the leading stock index in Thailand. It covers all of the Stock Exchange of Thailand ( SET) listed companies.

Calculation

The SET Index is a price index in which all joint-stock companies of the Stock Exchange of Thailand ( SET) are listed. It reflects the development of the entire equity market of Thailand. The Index will be determined solely on the basis of share prices and adjusted only to income from subscription rights and special. The weighting is based on the market capitalization of the companies listed. Corporate actions such as stock splits have no ( distorting ) influence on the index. The calculation is for the SET trading from 10:00 bis 12:30 clock clock local time ( 05:00 bis 07:30 clock clock CET) and 14:30 clock clock bis 16:30 local time ( 09:30 clock to 11: 30 clock CET) continuously updated.

History

20th century

The SET Index was launched on April 30, 1975 with a base value of 100 points. On March 17, 1976, the Thai benchmark index closed at 76.44 points at an all time low. Until 24 November 1978, he rose to a closing level of 266.20 points. During the recession of the early 1980s, the index lost 61.6 percent of its value. On April 14, 1982, he ended trading at 102.03 points.

Until 16 October 1987, the stock market barometer rose by 363.5 percent to a closing level of 472.86 points. After Black Monday, October 19, 1987 on the New York Stock Exchange, as the value of the Dow Jones index plummeted by 22.6 percent, the SET index fell again. On January 4, 1988, he ended trading at 287.71 points. The loss since October 1987 is 39.2 percent.

As a result of the liberalization of the financial sector end of the 1980s/early 1990s created a credit boom in Thailand. The growth of credit volume was at this time, on average, 8 to 10 percent higher than the growth rates of the gross domestic product (GDP). A growing proportion of loans has been employed here to purchase shares and real estate. The result was a rise in the stock market and a sharp rise in property prices.

On 29 April 1989, the first stock index closed above the limit of 500 points and on 31 May 1990 for the first time over the 1,000 -point mark. On 25 July 1990, the SET index ended the day at 1143.78 points, up by 297.5 percent higher. Four months later, on 30 November 1990 and closed at 544.30 points. The loss is 52.4 percent. In the following 3 years, the Thai leading index rose by 222.2 percent. On December 16, 1993, he joined the first time above the limit of 1500 points. Overheating and economic policy errors led to Thailand to the epicenter of the Asian crisis was part of the mid-1990s: speculation against the fixed exchange rate of the baht against the U.S. dollar led in 1997 to abandon the exchange rate system, massive devaluation of the baht and a banking crisis. 1998, the economy shrank by a massive 10.4 per cent. 21st Century

After the bursting of the speculative bubble in the technology sector ( dotcom bubble ) of the SET index fell to a low of 250.60 points to 11 October 2000. That was a decline since June 1999 by 54.1 percent. Until 29 October 2007, the stock index rose to a closing level of 915.03 points. The gain since October 2000 is 265.1 percent.

In the course of the international financial crisis in the U.S. real estate crisis originated in the summer of 2007, the index began to fall again. From the 3rd quarter of 2008, the crisis had an increasing impact on the real economy. As a result, stock prices plummeted worldwide. On 8 October 2008, the stock market barometer closed at 492.34 points below the 500 -point mark. A new low was achieved by the SET Index on 29 October 2008, when he finished trading at 384.15 points. This represents a decline since October 2007, to 58.0 percent.

The October 29, 2008 marked the turning point of the descent. From the autumn of 2008, the index was back on the way up. Until 9 January 2013, the Thai leading index rose by 270.6 percent to a closing level of 1423.46 points.
