Set piece (football)

As a standard situation (also called short default), a game situation in a team sport called, the results due to a previous stoppage in play.

The standard situation is due to the relatively well predictable process especially to be practiced in training. In football, especially the free kick and corner kick to be mentioned in this context, standard situations arise but also the throw-in, goal kick, penalty or on the break.

Standard situations exist in almost all team sports. Especially in American football moves are developed from the standard situations that run on command.

The term appeared in football the first time in the 1970s in the GDR. In the West German football, the term was adopted in the late 1980s.
