Setanta Sports Cup

The Setanta Sports Cup is an oriented since 2005 by two Irish football associations for competition, favoring the most successful men's teams from the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland. The competition is named after the main sponsor, the Irish Sport TV channel Setanta Sports.

Competition mode

The tournament for the Sentanta Cup is the end of the Northern Ireland and the beginning of the Irish season from February to April discharged (2005 March to May). For the first edition of 2005, the respective champion and runner and the Cup Winners were qualified for a total of six teams; for the second edition in 2006 the number of participants has been extended to the two League Cup winner. If doing a team several conditions that entitle to participate fulfill, is provided the number of participants to replenish the third and fourth of the league in the same association. The teams from the North and the Republic are distributed by lot evenly into two groups; in this play the clubs in the league mode with home and away game against each other. Since the second host in 2006 the teams first play in a home game against the second of the other group to the finals. In this the winner of the Setanta Sports Cup will be played. The two previous finals were each in Tolka Park in Dublin instead.

Previous Winners

While dealing with the Linfield FC could enforce an Irish club even with a 2-0 win against Shelbourne FC from the Republic in the first playoff; were in the second host only three of the four semi- finalists and both teams from the Republic. In this, the Irish Cup Winners Drogheda United was able to defeat the Irish champions Cork City with a goal in the 112th minute 1-0. Then in 2007 came together the two previous champions Drogheda United and Linfield. After a 1-1 draw in normal time and a goalless extension, Drogheda United was able to defend the trophy 4-3 on penalties. In the final of 2008, which took place on the first of November, to Cork City won against Glentoran 2-1 in a thrilling final after Cork City was still at half-time 0-1 behind. The seasonally across staged in 2009 and 2010 competition were won by the Bohemians Dublin to a tight 1-0 victory over city rivals St Patrick's Athletic in the final on May 15, 2010.
