Green foxtail ( Setaria viridis)

The genus of the bristle millet ( Setaria ) belongs to the tribe Paniceae in the subfamily Panicoideae within the family of grasses ( Poaceae ). They are spread by the moderates zones over the subtropics to the tropics and on cultivated land or on ruderal.

Description

Bristle millets are annual or perennial grasses. The stalks have nodes ( more nodes ). Their sheaths are open, bald and a maximum top forward and hairy at the edges. The ligule form a dense crown of hair with membranous base.

The spike-like, Rispige inflorescence is dense or propagated. The long bristles at the base of the spikelets corresponding reduced Rispenästen. The long bristles are covered with forward or backward bristle hair and remain after the fall of the spikelet are. The spikelets are elliptical, convex on one side and two flowered. The bottom flower is male or sterile, the upper hermaphrodite. The lower glume is three annoying and up to half as long as the spikelet. The upper glume is five to seven annoying and half to as long as the spikelet. The lemma the lower flower is as long as the spikelets that as long as the spikelet or slightly shorter, five annoying, boat-shaped, hardened, smooth or wrinkled and with their side faces the palea enclosing the upper flower. The palea is two annoying, hardening, smooth or wrinkled. There are three stamens present. The fruit is nearly as long as the flower and enclosed by the hardened deck and palea.

Types and distribution

They are spread by the moderates zones over the subtropics to the tropics and on cultivated land or on ruderal. In Europe, there are five kinds of them in Germany four, in Africa 43 species in temperate Asia 18 species, 16 species in tropical Asia, Australasia, 16 species on Pacific islands nine species in North America 27 species in South America and 48 species.
