Setchellanthus

Setchellanthus caeruleus (also: S. caeruleus ) is the only species of the genus Setchellanthus, which in turn forms the mono- generic family of plants Setchellanthaceae. This is associated with the order of the Kreuzblütlerartigen ( Brassicales ).

Description

Setchellanthus caeruleus is 0.3 to 1.2 m tall shrubs from. The vegetative habitus is characterized by no special features. The small leaves are not registering stipules and are arc annoying. The plant has unicellular T-shaped hairs on broad Epidermissockel. There are no myrosinbildenden cells present.

The large axillary flowers are blue and but a pungent odor. The flower is sechszählig ( hexamer ), in rare cases, five or siebenzählig and has a double perianth on. The sepals are fused and the Goblet of total non- split which can be regarded as a typical feature of the Setchellanthus flower. The petals are nailed, so run to the petal base too narrow. The Androecium disposed numerous and centrifugally in five to seven groups on an elongated axle. The pollen are tricolpate and so therefore have three openings. The gynoecium consists of three carpels. There is a short trained Gynophor. On the short pen the scars are formed nearly head -shaped. Setchellanthus has an axially constant placentation with 10-14 ovules per carpel into two rows.

As a fruit siebenspaltige capsule is formed. The number of seeds can vary considerably. In the literature are called from one to fifty seeds per fruit. Fruits of Setchellanthus caeruleus are oblong, the length of data range from 1-5 cm to 5.1-10 cm in length. They are relatively sturdy, with a simple, short- hairy surface

The seed length varies from 5 to 25 mm. The brown colored seed aril a missing. The seed coat is soft, uneven and wrinkly. An endosperm is present, but in some cases only slightly developed ( single-celled endosperm). The embryo is fully developed normally. The chromosome number is unknown.

Dissemination

Setchellanthus caeruleus comes just before at two places in Central Mexico, among others, in the province of Oaxaca.

System

The first description of the family in early 20th century by the American botanist Stith Townshend Brandegee. He also described the genus in 1909 Setchellanthus and the only way Setchellanthus caeruleus. By polecat family and nature were systematically recorded new.

Setchellanthus caeruleus was assigned to the caper family ( Capparaceae ) earlier. According to recent phylogenetic studies (especially Karol et al. 1999) the species was there but removed and transferred to a separate mono- generic family that Setchellanthaceae transferred. This is very similar to the Limnanthaceae.
