Settlement geography

The settlement geography is a sub-discipline of geography. My experience is the object populated by the people of the Earth's surface, ecumenism and Subökumene.

Definition

Recognized in accordance with their object of knowledge, describes and explains the settlement geography human settlements according to their location, matter and form, as well as the functions of the cause. It examines in particular their inner workings as well as the interactions between settlements and the surrounding geological factors. As an applied settlement geography contributes to the planning and development of urban and rural landscapes.

As the geography in general, so also the settlement geography lies at the interface of different disciplines - such as sociology, architecture, history or town planning. It is characterized by a holistic space scientific interest.

Subdivision

The settlement geography can be two sub-disciplines of human geography subordinate:

  • The settlement geography of urban areas ( Urban Geography );
  • The settlement geography of rural areas ( geography of rural settlements ).

However, the classical division of the discipline in the above two sections dissolves increasingly, as well as the urban-rural contrast merges into a continuum or in a composite.
