Seychellois presidential election, 2011

The presidential elections in the Seychelles in 2011 were conducted from 19 to 21 May 2011 and ended with a 55 % victory from James Alix Michel, the acting President of the Seychelles. 54847 registered voters were called to determine a president. As Michel had received more than 50 % of the votes, a second ballot was necessary otherwise unnecessary.

Democratic standards

The elections were accompanied by an observer Commission of the Commonwealth, the certified progress towards the Seychelles to electoral democracy, but also criticized shortcomings in the democratic process. On May 22, declared all the losing candidates that they will not participate in the official event for the announcement of the results, because they doubted the official results. Candidates

  • James Alix Michel, President of Seychelles since 2004, previously vice president. Member of the socialist-oriented People's Party, which was the only legal party in the country under the name Unity Party of the Seychelles People 1979-1991.
  • Wavel Ramkalawan, former priest since 1990 and leading figure of the opposition in the fight against the one-party state until 1991 as existing even after the introduction of the multiparty system. Member of the Liberal Seychelles National Party, which holds the achieved degree of democratization incomplete and doubtful. Ramkalawan had won in the 2006 elections against Michel 45 % of the vote.
  • Philippe Boullé, competed as an Independent, had already unsuccessfully participated in the presidential elections in 1993, 2001 and 2006 and will each receive less than 1% of the vote.
  • Ralph Volcere, the only " new " candidate, took to the New Democratic Party.

The application of a fifth candidate, Viral Dhanjee, was rejected by the Election Commission, as he could not produce the necessary valid supporters signatures of at least 500 eligible voters.
