It rises in the Belgorod Oblast in the south of the middle west of Gubkin Russian plate. Without this city to flow through, the flow from the source in a westerly direction over Kursk turns to Sosnyzja, where it flows just below the Desna. The river valley cuts deep part in the middle reaches in the Dnieper Plateau one.

The catchment area of ​​27,500 km ² comprises Seim.

Other cities on Seim are Lgow, Rylsk, Putywl and Baturyn. On Seim is also the Kursk nuclear power plant.
