Seymour Lipton

Seymour Lipton ( born November 6, 1903 in New York City; † December 15, 1986 in Glen Cove, New York ) was an American sculptor. He was an important representative of abstract art and the American abstract expressionism of the New York School in sculpture.

Life

Seymour Lipton attended the City College of New York, and studied from 1923 to 1927 Dentistry at Columbia University. As a sculptor, Lipton was an autodidact. He began in 1932 with figurative sculptures from 1945 until he only abstract worked. After 1943, he held various teaching assignments for artistic training.

Be art distinguished by the fact that he worked directly in the plates and in liquid alloys. This method produced organically twisting sculptures with richly bronzed structural effects. During the 1940s he created heavy jagged shapes themed spiritual conflicts. In the 1950s, his art was quiet, he created more graceful forms that were influenced by plant and animal life.

In the fifties, Lipton got art international attention and recognition. He exhibited internationally. In 1959, Seymour Lipton was at the documenta II in Kassel in the sculpture department.
