Sfântu Gheorghe

Sfântu Gheorghe [ sfɨntu ɡe̯orɡe ] (German Sankt Georgen, ungar Sepsiszentgyörgy [ ʃɛpʃisɛntɟørɟ ] ) is a city in Romania and the capital of Covasna County. It lies on the Olt River in a valley between the Baraolt and the Bodoc Mountains.

In 2003 it had about 61,500 inhabitants. The population consists of 46 121 Hungarians ( Székely ) and 14,131 Romanians. The rest consists mostly of Roma who live in a separate hamlet on the edge Sfântu Gheorghe's name ÖRKÖ. The majority of them live in abject poverty. But there are also wealthier Roma families among them.

History

Sfântu Gheorghe is one of the oldest cities in the Székely Land. The first mention was made in the year 1332., The namesake of the city is the Holy Patron Saint George of the local church. In the past Sfântu Gheorghe was the economic and administrative center of the Hungarian county Háromszék, which corresponds roughly to the present Romanian county Covasna.

Economy

Due to its central location in Romania, the city is an important transportation hub. Here, the two European highways E 574 and E 578 meet; also the other parts of the country are good transport connections. In the second half of the 19th century settled in the city, a textile factory, a cigarette factory and a candy factory at.

Incidents

During a severe accident of a CFR Calatori regional train and a tractor trailer on September 8, 2012, eight people were killed and two others seriously injured. The train collided with a tractor trailer with 15 harvesters on the unsecured railway crossing a dirt road just before Sfântu Gheorghe.

  • Fortress Church ( biserica fortificata - Vártemplom ), built in the 14th century in Gothic style
  • Headquarters of the hussar battalion in the modern center (now the National Archives ), built in 1820/21
  • Library building, built in 1832 as the seat of the district administration
  • Theater building, built in 1854-1856 as a city hall
  • The bazaar with its clock, built in 1868; the clock was created in 1893 by a watchmaker Mueller from Budapest.
