Sgonico

Sgonico (Slovenian Zgonik, German Sgonegg ) is a municipality with 2096 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the region of Friuli - Venezia Giulia and Trieste province. Sgonico is mainly known for its Grotta Gigante, which was recorded in 1995 as a most extensive underground cave in the Guinness Book of Records. The cave is 65 meters wide, 280 meters long and 107 meters high.

The municipality consists of the villages of Sgonico Borgo Grotta Gigante, Bristie, Campo Sacro, Colludrozza, Devincina, Gabrovizza, Rupinpiccolo, Sagrado, Sales, Samatorza and Stazione di Prosecco.

The neighboring communities of Sgonico are Duino- Aurisina ( Devin Nabrežina ) Monrupino ( Repentabor ) and Trieste and the Slovenian Sesana ( Sežana ).
