Sgurgola

Sgurgola is a municipality in the province of Frosinone in the Italian region Latium, located about 2627 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012). It is located 70 km southeast of Rome and about 25 km west of Frosinone.

The name possibly comes from the Lombard Sgurgola expression Sculca, which means guard.

Geography

Sgurgola situated on a hill above the Saccotal. It is the towering Monte Favitozzo (1283 m), which is one of the Monti Lepini surmounted. It is a member of the Comunità Montana Monti Lepini, Ausoni e Valliva.

The nearby towns are Anagni, Ferentino, Gorga (RM) and Morolo.

Sgurgola located 12 km from the A1 Autostrada del Sole motorway, exit at Anagni, removed.

With the train station Sgurgola, 4 km from the center, the place is on the railway line Rome - Naples.

History

According to legend, the ancient Sgurgola of soldiers to have been founded from the slave army of Spartacus, who had fled after the lost battle at Silarius 71 BC here. Archaeological but only different Villae Rusticae are detected. The large, perhaps imperial, so-called Villa Magna was destroyed by Ricimer in the 5th century.

The first mention of the Castrum Sculcule 1088, when it Pope Urban II to the Bishop of Anagni imputed, in turn, the Conti di Ceccano gave it as a fief. 1314 conquered Pietro Caetani Sgurgola for his family, in whose possession it remained until 1484, when it took Prospero Colonna. The Colonna ruled Sgurgola until 1818. 1870 it became part of the Kingdom of Italy. 1927 came from the province of Rome to the newly formed province of Frosinone.

After migration of population in the decades after the Second World War, Sgurgola experienced by the emerging industrialization of Saccotals another boom.
