Shabtai Shavit

Schavit Shabtai (Hebrew שבתי שביט; * 1939) was from 1989 to 1996 Director General of the Israeli secret service Mossad.

Shavit was a member of the special unit Sajeret Matkal of the Israeli armed forces. He completed his academic training at the American University of Harvard.

In 1957 he joined the Mossad. In parallel, he was from 1958 to 1959 commander of the Southern Command of the Israel Defense Forces. Within the Mossad Shavit has held various positions before he was appointed in 1989 as Director of the Secret Service. He was the last Mossad director, whose name was not called during his tenure in public. He was only known as "S". After the murder of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and various setbacks he had to resign. On 24 March 1996, Major General Dani Yatom was appointed as the new Director-General.

He became chairman of the Institute for Counter-Terrorism at the Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya in 2001.
