Shackleton (crater)

210

Shackleton is an impact crater on the lunar front side near the south pole of the moon. Because of its special location, some peaks are exposed on the crater rim of permanent solar radiation, while the interior is permanently in the shade. Therefore, the crater has been discussed as one of the possible locations for the establishment of a moon colony as a permanent power supply would allow on the tops built solar panels. In addition, it is assumed that volatiles could have as accumulated water ice in the cold trap of the crater interior.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1994 after the British polar explorer Ernest Shackleton.
