Shadowlands (film)

Shadowlands ( German Alternative title: Shadowlands - A Gift of the moment ) is a British biopic from 1993, the film by Richard Attenborough was nominated in two categories for the Oscar. . The screenplay by William Nicholson is based on his stage play of the same name and describes the late love between the deeply religious author CS Lewis and the American Joy Gresham. In the script also flowed autobiographical book Lenten Lands: My Childhood with Joy Davidman and CS Lewis Douglas Gresham one.

Action

The Literature Professor C. S. Lewis lives a quiet bachelor life with his brother Warren in the 1950s. With the American Joy Gresham, an ardent admirer of his work and himself an author, he has a loose correspondence. The tranquility of the deep religious Lewis is interrupted when Joy announces traveling with her son Douglas to England and want to visit him. After the first speechlessness is overcome through the attractive and vivacious Joy, Lewis fell in love with it. The feelings are reciprocal and both courting each other, Lewis cautious and careful Gresham impulsive and direct. Lewis wants the relationship but hold on a friendly basis and Joy is thus initially agreed. You would like to stay in England and needs to a residence permit. The easiest way to get this is by marrying an Englishman. The American asks Lewis to marry her in order to remain able to. Lewis agrees and shortly afterwards Gresham and Lewis are married. At the University of the rumor mill starts to bubble and Joy makes it great fun to fuel the rumors with new material. However, it comes between Joy and Lewis shortly afterwards to a big row, consequently Joy moves to London. After some time, Lewis noted that he lacks Joy and checks in with her. He learns that Joy is in the hospital and that bone cancer was diagnosed. The doctors give Joy only few months to live. Lewis may be the feelings he has for Joy, admit and tell her. Lewis struggles with his faith and tries to cope with Joy's death. At the end is the realization that " the happiness of today, the pain of tomorrow."

Background

The shooting took place among others in Oxford, at the city's Magdalen College and in the Bodleian Library, the main library of the University of Oxford, instead. Other scenes were filmed in the Radcliffe Camera and the Sheldonian Theatre. Another film set was located at Shepperton Studios. His debut film on December 25, 1993 in Los Angeles and New York City.

The dialogue book for the German synchronization wrote Theodor Dopheide. The German voice of Anthony Hopkins took Rolf Schult.

The lexicon of the International film ruled: " The brilliant performance of the lead actor makes you forget the weaknesses of an all too transparent didactic drama. " Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun- Times found the film " intelligent, moving and beautifully played " ( intelligent, moving and beautifully ACTED ). Janet Maslin wrote in December 1993 in the New York Times, Shadowlands " is with great delicacy of Ms. Winger [ ... ] and Mr. Hopkins, who is just wonderful played ".
