Shahbaz (bird)

Schahbaz or Shahbaz (Persian شهباز, DMG Şahbaz ) is the name of a mythical bird from Persian fables. The name is composed of the words shah (king) and Baz ( falcon), and thus means King hawk.

The mythical creature has the shape of a falcon or hawk, but the size of an eagle. It is said to have lived in the Zagros, Alborz and Caucasus Mountains. The Iranian mythology has the Schahbaz which the spirit of divine glory Xwarenah ( Farr ) is said to have accompanied to Persia, to a helping role in the colonization of Iran. As a bird Xwarenah appears in the ancient Iranian literature, for example in the holy book Avesta Yasht 19 in connection with the king Yima Xšaēta ( Jamshid ).

The Schahbaz is sometimes equated with the Zoroastrian spirit Farvahar which existed prior to the birth of a human and lives on even after his death.
