Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community
The community of the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux (SMSC, Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community ) was formerly known as Prior Lake Indian Reservation until it was renamed on November 28, 1969 in the Shakopee Mdewakanton - reservation from the Indian Reorganization Act.
A census of 2000 showed a population of 338 living on the reservation people. The tribe operates the Mystic Lake Casino and Little Six Casino, both of which are very successful due to their proximity to the metropolitan area of Minneapolis -Saint Paul. The tribal members are direct descendants of the Mdewakanton Dakota sub- tribe, who lived in villages near the banks of the lower Minnesota River. The tribal area is located in the area of the cities and Shakopee Prior Lake in Scott County, Minnesota.
