Shalmaneser I

Šulmānu - ašarād I ( in analogy to Šulmānu - ašarād IV Shalmaneser I., Šulmānu the supreme god ), son of Adad - nārārī I., ruled by the Assyrian King List 15 years as king of the Assyrian Empire.

He was the son and successor of Adad - nārārī I. and led as its predecessors, the title " governor of Bel and priests of Ashur ". He also called himself the Great King and King of the whole ( after the Babylonian rab kiššati ).

Upon his accession to the throne rebelled Uruadri the country, which is usually equated with the later kingdom of Urartu. The king raised his hand in prayer, called his armies together and began a campaign in the mountains. He claims to have taken it eight countries and 51 cities. "In three days I threw the whole country Uruadri to the feet of Ashur, their husbands were as low as corpses and fear filled her. " Salmānu - ašarēd occupied the country with a heavy toll, indicating that he could not establish a permanent rule. The rebellious mountain fortress of Arina, " the sanctuary, founded on solid rock," he subdued and took the country Musri one, was drawn against the already Assur- uballit I. to the field. Kutmuhu was also subjected. Šalmānu - ašarēd also led a campaign against Hanilgabat ( eponymous official of Ashur -nadin- Sumate ). In the same year the country KIRIURI rebelled against the Assyrian domination.

Šalmānu - ašarēd corresponded with the court of the Hittites. Mentions a letter from Major Kurigalzu to the king of Babylon, that the messenger of the king of Assyria was released after he was detained him for three years in Hatti. He returned with a Hittite messenger back to Ashur. If Faists suspicion that he was dating Shalmaneser in the time is right, he is serious upsets between Assyria and Hatti, presumably related to the Assyrian attack on Šatuara II of Hanilgabat. After a cuneiform text from Boğazkale he was from a small king of a great king ( KUB XXIII 103:27 and 92:5 ). This, too, is usually associated with the conquest of Mitanni, but does not match the previous negative reaction of the Hittites.

Salmānu - ašarēd built a palace at Nineveh, restored the local Ishtar temple and renewed Kalhu at the mouth of the Upper Zab into the Tigris.
