Shama (Ghana)

Shama is a small fishing village with a good 10,000 inhabitants on the coast of Ghana, West Africa. The place is located about 20 kilometers east of Sekondi -Takoradi in the Shama Ahanta East Metropolitan District at the mouth of the River Pra in the Atlantic Ocean.

Known and of historical importance is Shama by the Portuguese fort built here formerly Fort San Sebastian, which is one of the oldest in Africa and since 1979 is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In Shama is also Germany's first black professor who originated from what is now Ghana Anton Wilhelm Amo buried (1703-1784), who spent his twilight years at the Castle of San Sebastian.
