Shamai Haber

Shamai Haber ( * February 15, 1922 in Łódź, Poland, † August 24, 1995 in Paris, France ) was a French -Israeli sculptor who was born in Poland.

Life and work

Haber, who was born in Poland, immigierte with his Jewish family in 1935 through Luxembourg to the British Mandate of Palestine. He was trained at the Art Academy in Tel Aviv in 1949 and went to France, where he was at home in Paris at the Gare Montparnasse. From 1954 he produced sculptures of large stone pieces that he ordered. The surfaces of his work in granite and marble were mostly partially rough and polished.

Haber won the 1959 Prix Bourdelle for his work. 1959 proved Bram Hammacher on behalf of the Kröller -Müller Museum in his studio selecting two sculptures at the opening of the local sculpture park. 1960 Haber was invited by Willem Sandberg from the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and he placed at the park in Otterlo both works - as discussed - on.

Haber took in 1961 together with Itzhak Danziger for Israel in the exhibition at the Musée Rodin sculpture Jeune in Paris. From 1960 on, he worked mainly in France and did not return to Israel. He died of a heart attack in his studio in Paris.
