Shambyu

Shambyu ( 1036 m) is a Namibian village in the constituency Mashare, Kavango Region - East. With the surrounding settlements Nayita, Utokota and Gove Shambyu comes to around 21,000 inhabitants. The village is situated on the south bank of the Okavango, above the fertile countryside, around 20 kilometers east of the town of Rundu.

History

Shambyu was founded in 1930 as a Roman Catholic mission station and named after the tribe of Shambyu, ethnic group of the Kavango. The residence of the kings Shambyu was initially located in Uvungu - Vungu (17 ° 54 ' S, 19 ° 50' O- 17.919.8333 ) and today in Kayengona (17 ° 53 ' S, 19 ° 53' O 17.8833319.88333 ). In the 1960s, also from the Roman Catholic Church, a hospital and a youth center were opened in Namibia. 1984, the foundation stone for the Kavango - Museum was laid by Hompa Maria Mwengere in Shambyu.
