Shamil Serikov

Shamil Kerimowitsch Serikow ( Cyrillic Шамиль Керимович Сериков; born March 5, 1956 † 22 November 1989) was a Soviet wrestler. He was Olympic champion in 1980 in the Greco-Roman Bantamweight.

Career

Shamil Serikow, a Kazakh, began as a teenager with the rings. He became a member of Dinamo Alma- Ata, Almaty today. In this sports association in the days of the Soviet Union the best wrestler South Kazakhstan were drawn together, he soon developed into a world-class wrestler in Greco- Roman style. He was trained by A. Zharkov.

The breakthrough in the absolute top class of the Soviet Union he made in 1978, when he became Soviet champion bantamweight before Vasily Karatayev and Vitali Konstantinov. He was therefore sent in the same year the World Cup in Mexico City. Shamil could fully convince and win the World Cup with seven wins there. In the finals, he defeated Ivan doing Frgić from Yugoslavia and Pasquale Passarelli of the Federal Republic of Germany.

The year 1979 proved to be extremely successful for Shamil. First, he was European champion bantamweight before Pasquale Passarelli and then he defended in autumn in San Diego in 1978 won world title successfully in Bucharest. Again, it was there Pasquale Passarelli, the Shamil had to bow in the final battle itself.

The fourth win in a row at a major international championship celebrated Shamil Serikow then at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow. As a result of the Olympic boycott by the federal government could not start there Pasquale Passarelli. Shamil himself won six victories and in the final battle against Józef Lipień from Poland the gold medal.

For the last time Shamil was then at the European Championships 1981 in Gothenburg at an international championship at the start. In the Soviet championship this year, he had even only occupies the 9th place. From 1982, he no longer belonged to the Soviet national team.

He was therefore employed in any international championship more, but was still a few years coach at youth level. Shamil Serikow died in 1989 at the age of only 33 years.
