Shane Stone

Shane Leslie Stone AC QC PGDK ( born 1950 in Bendigo, Victoria) is an Australian politician of the Liberal Party of Australia and former Chief Minister of the Northern Territory.

Biography

Stone was the son of a teacher grew up in Wodonga, where his mother was the first female member of the City Council.

He was originally a member of the Country Party in 1971, moved in 1982 to the Liberal Party and joined after his move to the Northern Territory Country Liberal Party of the local (CLP).

In the elections for the Legislative Assembly of the Territory, he ran unsuccessfully in 1987 initially for the constituency Sadadeen, but was in 1988 elected Chairman of CLP. In the elections on 27 October 1990, he was elected a deputy of the Legislative Assembly of the Northern Territory and represented until his resignation on 21 February 2000 where the electoral district of Port Darwin.

A few days later, he was appointed on 13 November 1990 by Chief Minister Marshall Perron as Minister of Education and Arts, employment and training, mines and energy, and trade relations with Asia as well as Attorney General in the Cabinet.

On May 26, 1995, he was finally as Perrons successor even Chief Minister of the Northern Territory and took next to continue the line of some ministries. In his capacity as Attorney General, he was appointed Attorney-General and the (Queen 's Counsel ) in October 1997. In October 1998 he suffered because of a recently introduced controversial draft constitution voted down in a referendum. During his tenure he also introduced a tightening of criminal law. On 8 February 1999 he resigned from his position as Chief Minister, having previously led to internal party criticism, especially from backbenchers of the CLP because of his style of work and lack of popularity. Shortly afterwards, however, he was for a time president of the Liberal Party of Australia.

In 2006 he was " for his services in the policy of strengthening relations between the governments of the state and federal territory, the promotion of bilateral relations between Australia and the Asia -Pacific region as well as in the oil and gas industry " to Companion of the Order of Australia appointed.
