Shanghai Biennale

The Shanghai Biennale is a biennial, founded in 1994 in Shanghai. Regulation has applied since 2000, when the first time was also attended by non-Chinese artists, as the most important exhibition of contemporary international art in China. Main exhibition is the Shanghai Art Museum.

1 Shanghai Biennale 1996

The first Shanghai Biennial, with the main theme Open Space ( Open Space ), was held to 7 April 1996 of 8 March. 160 works by 29 artists from China should show how Chinese art itself had developed since the cultural opening in wide variety of shapes and styles.

2 Shanghai Biennale 1998

The second Shanghai Biennale, with the main theme Inheritance and Exploration ( heritage and discovery ), was held to 20 November 1998 by October 10. She put in their 256 exhibits focus on the latest development of traditional Chinese ink painting.

3rd Shanghai Biennale 2000

The third Shanghai Biennale, with the main theme Spirit Of Shanghai, was the first international exhibition, which also includes major contemporary artists from Europe, the USA, Africa and other Asian countries were invited. 67 artists from 18 nations presented on 6 November 2000 to 6 January 2001 on 300 works. The spectrum ranged from doing oil paintings on photographs, videos, sculptures to performances, and architectural designs.

4th Shanghai Biennale 2002

In the fourth Shanghai Biennale on 22 November 2002 to 20 January 2003 68 artists and architects from 20 countries presented their work to the main topic Urban Creation ( Urban work ).

5th Shanghai Biennale 2004

The fifth Shanghai Biennale was dedicated to 29 September to 28 November 2004 under the motto Techniques of the Visible (Techniques of the visible ) the close relationship between art, science and technology. The exhibition featured paintings, sculpture, photography, new media, film, installation and performance of more than 120 artists from Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and North America, including, for example, Yoko Ono, Cindy Sherman, and Zhang Xiaogang.

6th Shanghai Biennale 2006

The sixth Shanghai Biennale under the theme HyperDesign was held to 5 November 2006 of 5 September. The artistic director was Zhang Qing, the curators Zhang Qing, Huang Du, Shu -Min Lin, Wonil Rhee, Gianfranco Maraniello, Jonathan Watkins and Xiao Xiaolan.

7th Shanghai Biennale 2008

The Seventh Shanghai Biennale was held from September 9 to November 16, 2008 under the theme of Trans Local Motion at the Kunstmuseum Shanghai. Artistic director was ZhangQing, the curators Henk Slager, Julian Heynen, Xiang Liping and Li Ning.

8th Shanghai Biennale 2010

The Eighth Shanghai Biennale was held from October 23 2010 to February 28, 2011 under the theme Rehearsal at the Art Museum Shanghai.

9th Shanghai Biennale 2012

The ninth Shanghai Biennale was held from March 31, 2013 October 2, 2012. Qiu Zhijie was chief curator, co-curators were Boris Groys, Jens Hoffmann and Johnson Chang.
