Development

In 1935, the government decided to expand the trans -Atlantic air traffic. 1937 was a first flight from Newfoundland to Foynes place and in 1939 a test flight to the new airfield Rineanna. Although the civil aviation was set during World War II, the airfield was expanded. On September 16, 1945, the first regular flight took place that went out of Gander ( Newfoundland). At that time, the range of the aircraft was still limited to about 4000 miles; therefore had to be used the shortest link between Western Europe and eastern North America. It was not until the late 1950s, it was then possible to fly more than 4,000 miles and reach the large airfields in direct flight. The importance as a transatlantic aviation hub thus decreased.
