Shantar Islands

The Shantar Islands (Russian Шантарские острова / Schantarskije Ostrowa ) are an archipelago in the southwestern Sea of ​​Okhotsk in Russia's Far East.

The archipelago consists of 15 islands with a total area of ​​about 2,500 km ². They are separated from the coast ( Tugurbucht and Tugur Peninsula ) by narrow straits, including the only four kilometers wide Lindholmstraße between the mainland and the nearest islands. Northwest of the islands extends the Udabucht, southeast of the Academy Bay. The sea area between Schantarinseln and land is also known as Schantarmeer ( Шантарское море / Schantarskoje more) referred.

The surface of the islands is largely mountainous, coastal steep. The island is formed of sandstone and mica schists, which were pierced by granites and ultrabasic rocks.
