Shapsugs

The Schapsugen or Schapsughen ( Adyghe Шапсыгъ - адыгэ ) are an ethnic group of Circassians originating in the North Caucasus.

In Russia, they primarily inhabit the Republic of Adygea, as well as on the Black Sea coast of the Krasnodar region (Sochi, Tuapse ). The majority of Schapsugen now lives out of the Caucasus in Turkey, in the Jordanian cities of Amman, Na'ur and Marj al - Hammam, Syria, Israel, the USA and the EU countries.

The Schapsugen speak the Adygei language that is written in the late 1930s with the Cyrillic alphabet.

The majority are Sunni Muslims Schapsughen.

The mother of Sultan Abdulhamid II Tir - î - Müjgan Kadınefendi was a Schapsugin.
