Shari Lewis
Shari Lewis ( born January 17, 1933, New York City; † August 2, 1998 in Los Angeles ) was an American puppeteer and ventriloquist. During her more than 40 - year career in television Lewis has won several Emmys.
Life
Lewis was born in 1933 in New York, the daughter of Jewish couple, Abraham and Ann Hurwitz. Abraham Hurwitz was a very well-known in New York magician. At the beginning of her career Lewis has performed with various puppets on in nightclubs. In 1952 she won the talent show Arthur Godfrey 's Talent Scouts. As a result, Lewis hosted several children's programs on local television. 1956 Lewis appeared with Lamb Chop, a sock puppet, which was a ewe lamb, on the children's show Captain Kangaroo. Four years later, Lewis got her own children's TV show on NBC. The Shari Lewis Show was broadcast from October 1 1960 to 1963 in the morning program.
Since 1976, Lewis has been immortalized with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame ( 6743 Hollywood Blvd ).
Lewis was married twice and had with her second husband, a daughter, Mallory Lewis. Lewis died in 1998 from the effects of cancer. Since the death of her mother Mallory Lewis with Lamb Chop occurs.
