Sharif

Sherif (Arabic شريف, DMG Sarif, noble, noble ', plural اشراف, DMG Ashraf, Moroccan - Arabic chorfa, šorfā ʾ ) is the religious title of the descendants of Muhammad, descended from him about his eldest grandson Hasan. Since the 14th century the Sherifian descent was made clear by a green turban.

The descendants of his younger grandson Husain carry the title Sayyid.

Significant Scherifenfamilien were the Idrisids and the Saadian in Morocco and the Zaydi Yemen. Today govern only in Morocco with the Alawites and in Jordan with the Hashemites families with scherifischer descent. The Hashemites had exercised control over Mecca and Medina since the 10th century and therefore performed the title of Grand Sherif (see: List of Großscherifen ). After the First World War, they dominated beside the Hejaz (up to 1925) even the Iraq ( until 1958 ), Jordan (since 1921) and Syria ( until 1920 ).
