Situation and development

In a north-south direction, the level of the southern slopes of Mount Carmel over 50 kilometers along the Mediterranean to the River Yarkon extends. With an average width of 15 kilometers, it extends to the east to the mountains of Samaria. The main towns in the region of the plane are Hadera, Netanya, Herzliya, and at the southern end Petah Tikva and Tel Aviv.

Through sand dunes on the coast the plane marshy easily. In earlier centuries, it was still inhabited result of targeted drainage. In the Song of Solomon (Song of Songs 2.1 ELB ) and in the Book of Isaiah ( 35.2 ELB ) praised the fertile plains and the rose of Sharon, which animated many later poets to follow. In the dunes the sea daffodil occurs (Hebrew חבצלת החוף ), which is often identified with it today because of the Hebrew name of the rose of Sharon ( חבצלת השרון ).

The most famous city was founded by Herod the Great of Caesarea Maritima, which was the capital of the province of Palestine in Roman and Byzantine times. Later, the drains fell into disrepair; in recent centuries, the level of swamps was traversed, malaria so prevalent. Accordingly, the area was sparsely populated and was rather used for grazing. Villages of the indigenous Arab population there were in the coastal strip only comparatively rare; the places were usually further inland on the edge of the mountains.

With the start of immigration in the 19th century, new settlements were established and were made more land for agricultural use. The start was made in 1852 settlers from West Prussia and the Bergische Land (including Friedrich United Steinbeck, 1821-1858, great-uncle John Steinbeck ). Then in 1866 the colonists came from Maine and founded the City at the time of Adam (now English American Colony; Hebrew המושבה האמריקאית, transliterated: haMoschavah haAmerika'it; Arab امليكان, DMG Amelīkān ) called settlement outside Jaffa, now between today's roads Rechov Eilat ( רחוב אילת ) and Rechov haRabbi mi - Bacharach (Hebrew רחוב הרבי מבכרך ) is located in Tel Aviv- Jaffa.

After most of the settlers of both early colonies had emigrated to the United States, took over in 1869 Württemberg Templars and founded in 1871 another called Sarona (now Hebrew הקריה, transliterated: haKiria, now government district in Tel Aviv), which was named after the plane. The following aliyoth ( Jewish immigration ) towards the end of the 19th century were dehydrated further areas targeted and saw the establishment of many more, below ( in the Atlas Mosheh Bravers, see section literature) mentioned Jewish settlements (initially as Moschawot, later mainly as moshav and kibbutz ).

Today, the Plain of Sharon, apart from the big cities the most densely populated area of Israel. It is used for intensive agriculture, especially the cultivation of citrus fruits, but also of avocados, cotton, vegetables and wine. The cultivated in this area, Sharon fruit, a variant of the persimmons, was named after the plane.
