Shatsk, Russia

Shatsk (Russian Шацк ) is a town in Ryazan Oblast (Russia) with 6561 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located about 200 km southeast of Ryazan Oblasthauptstadt at the Schatscha, a left tributary of the Zna in the river system of the Volga.

Shatsk is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

History

The place was built in 1553 as a fortified military post at the then southeastern border of the Russian state and was part of the river and city is named after line of defense ( Schazkaja sasseka ). Initially called the place Schazki Gorodok ( Schatscha - town after the river; Finno- Ugric origin designation ).

1774 rose the inhabitants of the place during the Pugachev rebellion on the part of farmers.

1779 the municipal law as an administrative center of a circle ( Ujesds ) of Tambov was awarded.

In the 18th and 19th century, the city was an important trade center for hemp fabrics, but its economic importance lost in a row, bringing the population halved during the 20th century.

In 1923, the government Shatsk Ryazan, from which later emerged the Oblast.

Culture and sights

In 18 kilometers from Shatsk remote village Starotschernejewo the ensemble of Tschernejewer Nikolai Monastery is located ( Чернеево - Никольский монастырь / Tschernejewo - Nikolski monastyr ) from the 17th to 19th centuries.

In the village Schelannoje is since 1968 a Museum of the Rajons Shatsk.

Economy and infrastructure

In Shatsk there are companies in the textile and food industry ( meat processing company Schazkmjaso ). Nearby is the limestone quarry Jambirnski.

Nearest railway station is the Nischnemalzewo good 30 kilometers away on the route Moscow - Ryazan - Rusajewka - Sysran.

By Shatsk leads the M5 highway Moscow - Ryazan Samara Chelyabinsk, of which R124 branch off here on the A143 Morshansk to Tambov and the regional road to Kasimov.
