Shauna Rolston

Shauna Rolston ( born January 31, 1967 in Edmonton / Alberta ) is a Canadian cellist.

The daughter of the pianist Isobel Moore and violinist Thomas Rolston began at the age of two years playing the cello; Her first teacher was Claude Kenneson. Four year old, she played chamber musician with her parents, at the age of seven, she had her first radio appearance and eight-year-old her first concert at the University of Alberta.

When she was zwöf years old, her parents were co-directors of the musical program at the Banff Centre. There had Rolston opportunity to perform with artists such as Zoltan Szekely, Gyorgy Sebok, Luciano Berio, William Primrose, Igor Oistrakh and Aldo Parisot and with playing with Menahem Pressler recordings.

She came into the gifted program at the Banff Centre for the Arts and attended master classes at Zara Nelsova, János Starker, Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi and Gabriel Magyar. The age of fourteen she had at the Geneva Conservatory lessons with Pierre Fournier, then in Aldeburgh with William Pleeth, the teacher of Jacqueline du Pré.

In 1983, she debuted with her mother at the piano in the New York Town Hall with a program in which it, inter alia, Violet Archers aufführte dedicated to her improvisation for solo cello. In 1986, she began studying at Yale University with Aldo Parisot. She earned a Bachelor of Arts there in Art History (1991) and the degree of Master of Music ( 1992).

Since her New York debut Rolston entered the world on at concerts and festivals, including under the conductor Krzysztof Penderecki, Mario Bernardi, Hans Graf, Andrew Davis, Jukka -Pekka Saraste, Marin Alsop, Pavel Kogan, Andreas Delfs, Keith Lockhart, Kenneth Jean, Uri Meyer, Peter Bay, Sam Wong, George Hansen, Andrey Boreyko and Yoav Talmi. In addition, she worked among others in chamber music with the Gallois Quintet, Menahem Pressler and the pianist Heather Schmidt.

Numerous composers have dedicated their works, including Kelly -Marie Murphy, Heather Schmidt, Oskar Morawetz, Bruce Mather, Christos Hatzis, Chan Ka Nin, Krzysztof Penderecki, Gavin Bryers, Mark Anthony Turnage, Rolf Wallin, Augusta Read Thomas, Karen Tanaka and Jean Coulthard. More recently, it led to double concertos by Karen Tanaka, Ron Royer and Kelly -Marie Murphy, a Concerto for Cello and Orchestra with Children's Choir of Gary Kulesha and cello concertos by Chris Paul Harman and Larysa Kuzmenko.

Since 1994, Rolston is professor at the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto.
