Name
The name comes from the language of the Anishinabe ( Ojibwe ), meaning " south ".

According to United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 15.5 km ², of which 0.3 km ² fall on water surfaces.

City and County entertain the Shawano Municipal Airport, which is located on Shawano Lake.
